Staying Fit and Healthy During Pregnancy

10:40 am

Over the past 3 days I have been talking to a few women about pregnancy and labour. After Helen going into labour the other day, it has prompted me to think about the things I need to do to prepare my body and mind for not only pregnancy, but the birth as well. I have spoken to a few women, all of different shapes and fitness level, and I have noticed a pattern forming with their comments about labour.

They all had pretty much the same labour time (24-30 hours). I noticed that the 2 women who were a little overweight and not in the best shape, complained a lot about how horrible the labour was. They said they were exhausted by the end and struggled to stay awake once it was over. The other 3 women who were all fit and healthy and maintained their fitness levels while pregnant, said labour wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t as bad as they thought! They also said their energy levels during the labour were great and they were able to handle the pain relatively drug free. They also commented on how great they felt after the labour and had new found energy!

I have come to the conclusion that the healthier and the fitter you are, the better you can handle labour. Some of you might being going dah!! but it is something I knew but never thought it could make that much of a difference until I talked to these women.

I have set out to make sure I am the fittest I possibly can be before I fall pregnant, I will try and maintain it as much as I can during my pregnancy. Helen (cousin in-law who just had a baby), stayed very fit during her pregnancy. Before she fell pregnant, she lost around 20kg. while she was pregnant, she went swimming 3 times per week, walked and drank lots of water. She didn’t give in to all of her cravings for junk food and when she did she only ate small amounts. I really think this helped her during her labour. I am seeing her this weekend and hope to grill her for all the information.
